ETA: there is now a little sequel in the comments (which now has its own sequel!) and and I strongly encourage anyone who would like to take this idea and run with it to do so! On that note [livejournal.com profile] baileyhix has written an amazing part two  and [livejournal.com profile] seektheinfinite has an equally wonderful conclusion, both of which I can't recommend enough!

It's never been the quietest of laptops but the noises it's making now are frankly alarming. This isn't the sound of an overworked fan, either (not that the fan isn't overworked, mind); this is a new, exciting graunchy, sound. Like there's grit in the hard drive or the last, guttural, moans of some sort of wildebeest.

The sound is going too, and this is definitely a physical problem. If I lean on the right front corner the sound crackles then stops altogether. Simple, I tell myself, don't lean on that spot. Only, and there's always an only, that's exactly were my hand rests when I'm typing and it takes one tap to lose the sound and a couple of days to get it back. Not that I know why is comes back... in fact I don't want to think about the loose connections that this thing must have inside!

Occasionally it crashes. Not the ubiquitous blue screen of death, just black. Illuminated black, no warning, just black. If I'm lucky it restarts, if I'm not we can spend an afternoon together going round and round in increasingly frustrated circles.

As I said: dying!

But, but I like my laptop! I know it's quirks, I know which keys I have to hit a little harder when I'm typing, I know the magic (non crashing) sequence for starting up the graphics programs. I'm sort of attached to all it's little problems; my laptop isn't prefect, but then neither am I.

I just don't think it's going to last much longer.

Visited [livejournal.com profile] kotturinn  with [livejournal.com profile] doire and c yesterday. We were treated to a lovely meal and entertained by the cat before heading out to the nearby chalk pits on the look out for glow worms.

I had never seen a glow worm in the flesh before this and had no idea what I should be looking for so spent the first half hour or so peering at nothing in particular; it's surprising how bright lumps of chalk can look by moonlight! [livejournal.com profile] doire spotted the first bona fide one, half way up a cliff wall and inconveniently out of photographic range, and by the end of the (very late) night we'd seen about eight.

Results of the hunt: )

My attempt to photograph the first glow worm of the night:

A surprisingly accurate depiction of a glow worm as seen from a distance... well the colour is right.

So very, very tired. So tired I can hardly drag my fingers over the keyboard.

Watched the Leonids last night, which involved a few spectacular meteors and finding out just what the cats get up to when we put them out for the night.

Stumbled to bed at around half six. If that wasn't bad enough I was unceremoniously woken just two hours later by the very same cats who were then demanding to be fed.

At some point, tucked up in bed, I had a wonderful story idea, unfortunately my notebook was still outside. Don't worry, I thought to myself, this idea is corker, there's no way you'll forget it! Unfortunately when I awoke later all I could remember of the marvellous piece of prose was just how marvellous it had been, everything else has been lost to the ether...

Your present... )

Here's an extra little snippet of something I'm putting off while I tackle my yuletide fic... just so I don't abandon it:

Feeling Slightly Mad... )

Have a happy birthday... don't have too much cake ;)

vomit_bunny: (Mouse)

Dear Yuletide Santa,

Yep, you've been directed to a journal that I use to ramble, in the comfortable knowledge that no one will hear me, and I've forgotten to update in a while... Um, sorry. Not very helpful, I know.

Hope this will be of some help (or reassurance): I enjoy a rather terrifying range of fic. Gen, slash, and het are all fine with me. I like angst, fluff, social realism, crack, stories where nothing obvious really happens, plot, porn, and much more. Trust me, you can't go wrong.

I know my prompts are a bit vague but I'm sure I'll love what ever you come up with!

Have fun and good luck,

and now that I've found it every story idea I have ever had has abandoned me!

It's been raining again. In fact, when it's not raining it's been looking like it's about to rain.

Anyway, I was rummaging through my image files when I came across some photographs I'd taken in sunnier times.

Maybe it will be nicer tomorrow...

I read the J K Rowling contribution to the Waterstone's "What's Your Story" celebration of the Year of Reading.

Over on JournalFen there was some discussion of a Life on Mars (convergent time-lines, you see) crossover and this is repost of my efforts.

Title: James Potter and the Mancunian Police.
Rating: PG - Green Cortina (swearing)
Characters: Gene and Sam (gen)
Word Count: 333
Warnings: Crack
Notes: Crossover with JKR's Harry Potter Non-prequel (link to a legible transcript), one and half lines lifted from that story.

Anyway, enough of this nonsense and back to the pros. Of all the stories I especially loved Neil Gaiman and Tom Stoppard's contributions. Both are definitely well worth a look.

You can find all stories using this link, however to read them you have to have Flash enabled (Damn you Waterstone's, damn you!).

It's been rather cold and wet today.

Especially cold and wet once you take into account that it's June.

Anyway, what else would I do on such a grim day but garden? It's not as mad as it sounds.

The rain had loosened up the root systems of most of the weeds and cool air made the whole experience rather refreshing...

I still felt a need for a hearty soup afterward. )

On a more seasonal note the fruit is looking good. Everything seems to have at least set something... with the sad exception of some of the current bushes.

A few of the raspberries and tayberries may even be ripe in the next few days. Tasty.

Things I did today:

Despaired at the continued erosion of the rights of the individual and the UK government in general.

Ogled some wet footballers.

I don't have any pictures of the systematic degradation of civil liberties. I doubt it would be as pretty.

I made some onigiri. Then I spent some quality time with a sheet of nori and a pair of scissors turning them into oni-giri.

And that was a terrible pun. Sorry.

The results they, well, amused me.

But then my mind is in the gutter.

P.S I don't bittorrent. That would be wrong.
So there's no way I could have accidentally used all our bandwidth this afternoon. None.

No mater what the people I live with say.
